Who is the Holy Ghost, or Holy Spirit? The nature of God himself [spirit] who is also holy. | Matt 1:18 Now the birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise: When as his mother Mary was espoused to Joseph, before they came together, she was found with child of the Holy Ghost [spirit of God]. | Matt 3:11 I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance: but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost [spirit of God], and with fire: | Matt 12:31 Wherefore I say unto you, All manner of sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men: but the blasphemy against the Holy Ghost [spirit of God] shall not be forgiven unto men. | Matt 12:32 And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost [spirit of God], it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come. | Mark 1:8 8 I indeed have baptized you with water: but he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost [spirit of God]. | 1 Cor 6:19-20 What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost [spirit of God] which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? For ye are bought with a price: therefore glorify God in your body, and in your spirit, which are God's. | 1 Cor 12:3 Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed: and that no man can say that Jesus is the Lord, but by the Holy Ghost [spirit of God]. | 2 Pet 1:21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost [spirit of God]. | The above scriptures give references to the "Holy Ghost". The context in these scriptures however refers to the spirit of God. Luke 3:22 22 And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased. | At a first glance the above scripture seems to say that the Holy Ghost had the body of a dove, while a voice far up in the heavens boomed the famous words. This also appears to show that the Holy Ghost and the voice above were from two separate sources. Add in the Son, and now we have the Trinity again. However if we back up a moment and re-examine the nature of God who is holy, and capable of creating things unconceivable to us, and in a manner which we could relate to. God created an image [either a vision or other visible phenomena] representing his spirit descending and resting upon his son Jesus, and then spoke audible words from heaven praising his son. Therefore giving the people watching nearby the ability to believe without a shadow of doubt that Jesus truly is the son of God. This phenomena was created to mark a holy event which was taking place, and to give concrete evidence to the bystanders of this event. There are many other places in scripture which relate to phenomena like this where God reveals to man an image to help them to believe: Moses and the burning bush; The tongues of fire resting over the disciples heads in the book of Acts; The handwriting on the wall in the book of Daniel; etc, etc, etc. The one thing they all have in common is the marking of a holy or unholy event which is at hand. Without the physical evidence to behold, the people might well deny that the named event is for real. Most people only believe what they can see, smell, taste, hear and feel - in other words man is generally a five senses oriented being, and requires evidence from one or more of his external senses in order to believe something is real or not to him. The exception would be by faith - believing in something without any way to prove it in the world of the senses. Jhn 14:16-20 KJV - And I
will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he
may abide with you for ever; [Even] the Spirit of truth; whom the world
cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye
know him; for he dwelleth with you, and shall be in you. I will not
leave you comfortless: I will come to you. Yet a little while, and the
world seeth me no more; but ye see me: because I live, ye shall live
also. At that day ye shall know that I [am] in my Father, and ye in me,
and I in you. |
Jhn 14:26 KJV - But the Comforter, [which is] the
Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all
things, and bring all things to your remembrance, whatsoever I have said
unto you. | Gods gift of himself, his
spiritual extension (so to speak), or more so, his spiritual seed (born
again). The day of Pentecost began the church age, Christianity.
